The Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico (also referred to as the “BP oil disaster”) was an industrial disaster that began on 20 April 2010. Considered to be the largest marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry, the challenge to manage the clean-up efforts to protect beaches, wetlands and estuaries from the spreading oil was a task of monumental proportions.
