It’s August 1991, and Brooklyn-born Sara is a successful world banker living in London with her teenage daughter, Tess. It’s her 54th birthday, and her sisters are flying in from different continents to be with her. Pfeni, a peripatetic world traveler and writer, arrives from Bombay, and is met by her boyfriend Geoffrey, a well-known theater director. Gorgeous, a suburban soccer mom who’s become a local celebrity for her radio self-help show, comes from Newton, MA. Sara has invited her proper English boyfriend, Nick Pym, to the festivities, but the evening is complicated by the surprise appearance of Geoffrey’s friend Merv, “the show-biz novelty furrier,” who immediately sets his sights on Sara and confuses her mightily. To add to Sara’s troubles, Tess is on the verge of flying off to Lithuania with her boyfriend, Tom, a working class bloke with family ties to the resistance against the Soviet Union. All of this leads to a diverting weekend of romance, verbal sparring, song and dance, and maybe a couple of epiphanies about love and acceptance. A warm and literate living room comedy, the play explores the lifelong bonds of sisterly love with sweetness and subtlety. Winner of the 1993 Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Broadway Play, The Sisters Rosensweig was a career pinnacle for the late Wendy Wasserstein, author of The Heidi Chronicles and Uncommon Women and Others.
