This 6 hour workshop will provide participants with numerous tips and techniques on how to more effectively and empathically engage with victims in a trauma-informed manner, including helping participants understand the foundations of an effective trauma-informed interview. The workshop will break down for participants what a “day in the life” looks and feels like for a domestic and/or sexual violence victim participating in the criminal justice system. Additionally, this workshop will discuss the significant impact a ‘victim-blaming’ culture has on a victim’s ability to engage (or not) with the criminal justice system. Participants will learn that engaging with victims in a trauma-informed manner will not only improve the victim’s experience, but will also positively impact the outcome of a criminal case.

All Law Enforcement Officers are welcome to attend this training sponsored by the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office, hosted by the Pitt Community College, and made available by the Office on Violence Against Women, US Department of Justice, with grant number 2014-HI-AX-K001.
