Join Colette Marie for Breath & Bandhas Workshop, Sunday, May 20th from 1:15pm-3:15pm.

WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?
This workshop is about learning the art of proper Ujjayi (Warrior) breath and the engagement of three key energy locks, Mula Bandha (root lock), Uddiyana Bandha (lower abdominal lock) and Jalandhara Bandha (chest to chin lock) in the practice of yoga.

WHAT IS UJJAYI BREATH?
When practicing Ujjayi, you completely fill your lungs, while slightly contracting your throat, and breathe through your nose. This breathing technique is used throughout Ashtanga and Vinyasa yoga practices. An added component to Ujjayi breath is a technique called, Visamavritti (Irregular or manipulated breath), with which the breath is experienced in ratios, of an, inhale breath count, pause or hold, exhale breath count and pause or hold. The ratio is expressed as 3:1:3:1= 8 seconds total breath time. And we will learn to extend this time to 4:2:4:2= 12 seconds total breath time.

WHAT IS A BANDHA?
Bandha' (bond, arrest) is a term for the "body locks" in Hatha Yoga, treated under the heading of mudra (gesture). Specific bandhas are:
• Mula Bandha - contraction of the perineum
• Uddiyana bandha - contraction of the abdomen into the rib cage
• Jalandhara Bandha - tucking the chin close to the chest
There are also two minor bandhas
• Hasta Bandha - the palms of the hands
• Pada Bandha - the soles of the feet

WHY YOU SHOULD TAKE THIS WORKSHOP:
This will be a great opportunity to learn the physiological aspects and anatomical aspects of warrior breathing, which includes the contraction and expansion of the lungs, rib cage and abdomen as well as the voluntary movement of the flap in the throat called the epiglottis, during a rigorous sequence of yoga postures to remain engaged with breath. Similarly, we will also learn the mechanical aspects and anatomical aspects of contracting the areas regarded as “body locks”, which govern the flow of any yoga practice and seated meditation practice and will practice engaging our bandhas during a rigorous sequence of yoga postures and inversion work.

DURING THIS WORKSHOP YOU WILL LEARN:
• The breathing of Ujjayi and Visamvritti breath
• Practice proper muscle contraction to engage Bandhas
• How to modify and adapt breathing and energy locks comfortably
• How to engage the right muscle groups while in various postures
• How to build strength in various muscles for sustainability
