In the past 10 years, 90% of musical writers have been men (The Stage, 2017) - and yet, there has been an explosion of female talent in the British new writing scene. Hosted by songwriting team Barlow & Smith, this concert celebrates female songwriters past and present, for an evening of fun and brilliant music. This event is a fundraiser for the Women's Musical Theatre Initiative (run in partnership with London Playwrights' Workshop), which supports female songwriters at different levels of their careers.
"Each songwriter was superb... a fantastic display of new writing" - Musical Theatre Review
Composer Bella Barlow & Bookwriter/Lyricist A.C. Smith are a new musical theatre writing team who have been described as ‘exceptionally clever’ and a ‘bright new songwriting team’ by the Musical Theatre Review. Their new show 'Lock and Key' will premiere at VAULT Festival in March 2018, directed by Adam Lenson and presented by Warehouse Musical Productions. Barlow & Smith's work has appeared at venues including the Globe Theatre, HighTide, St James Studio, Arts Theatre Upstairs, and H.R.H.'s 90th birthday gala at Theatre Royal Haymarket, and their debut album is available on iTunes (produced by Ian Shaw). For this initiative, they are partnering with London Playwrights' Workshop, a not-for-profit organisation that supports emerging writers in pursuing their creative and career goals. LPW runs workshops and programmes for writers, and over 5,000 writers per month use the online resources on the organisation's blog.
