In 1901, playwright August Strindberg created a purely Expressionistic drama, A Dream Play. In this new type of play, “The characters split, double, multiply, evaporate, condense, dissolve and merge. But one consciousness rules them all: the dreamer’s; for him there are no secrets, no inconsistencies, no scruples and no laws.” A Dream Play changed forever the theatre and art. The primary character in the play is Agnes, the daughter of the Vedic god Indra, who descends to Earth to bear witness to the lives of human beings. During her fascinating journey, she experiences life through about 40 people and realizes that human beings are to be pitied. Finally, she returns to heaven and awakens from her dream-like experience. In A Dream Play, we enter the world of the dreamer where anything and everything can and does happen.
