Freedom|Moves Symposium – Dancing to Undo – A weekend of movement, discussion and collaboration

noun: freedom

the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.
the state of not being imprisoned or enslaved.

a workshop exploring the elusive FREEDOMS of dancing
how we imagine
and see FREEDOM as a capacity
and a possibility
in our embodied practices and dancemaking

We work through narratives/stories/movements and choreographies of black/queer/mixed/trans/visible/invisible/cis-/bi/sexual mutabilities.

Is freedom possible? Is it a useful concept for embodied artists? How does the concept of freedom shift depending on lived experience? Is freedom an end goal, a location, a state of mind? Is it making the best of bad situations? Is it doing whatever you want - just because you can? Does freedom need safety to exist? We wonder about how what happens isn’t always visible, and how freedom, always a moving target, remains elusive … and moves us towards care.
