Climb aboard a 19th Century packet boat and learn how Erie’s founding, royal family created a commercial waterway from Presque Isle Bay to Pittsburgh. Ontarians will be delighted to learn that one of their iconic canal and railroad engineers, Sir Casmir Gzowski, became famous by taking over as chief engineer on the extension canal project. Long before engineering was recognized as a discipline in the United States, Gzowski (great grandfather of CBC Radio’s Peter Gzowski) lived in Erie and later moved to Canada. Gzowski was knighted by the Queen for his Canadian work on the Welland Canal, the Maitland to Colborne feeder canal and the Grand Trunk Railroad.
