PMP | TALK ABOUT ART | HELEN EDLING
Friday 6th April
6:00pm - 7:30pm
NewBridge: Newcastle
FREE for Members and Non-members.

Helen Edling invites you to a discussion about Once Upon a Space #2, a project she is undertaking with artists Sally Madge, Kate Stobbart, Sarah Tulloch, Kat Auld, Stevie Ronnie and David Foggo between 2nd and 8th April.

There will be an open evening and informal discussion on Friday 6th April, 6:00-7:30pm at Carliol House which will be open to NewBridge members and the public.

Over the weekend of 7th and 8th April Helen wants to open up the space for NewBridge members to participate and add to the project and leave it totally open to engage with in any shape or form.

Project Information:

Once Upon a Space #2 (or, the creation of a collaborative spatial narrative)

Background: In 2010 Edling did a experimental residency project at Carol Lubys space 25SG in Newcastle UK and this resulted in a project called Once Upon a Space.

She invited seven artists to take part in a collaborative experimental exchange project loosely based on the idea of the Rhizome, where a story/micro-universe was created over a period of ten days through exchanges between the participants. Each reacted to and interacted with each others works in the space.

For her week at NewBridge (Monday 2nd - Sunday 8th April), Edling has invited six artists to collaborate with her and plans to experiment with the same format as Once Upon a Space #1, but allow for multiple starting points; non-hierarchical entry and exit points; and allow for multiple interpretations and readings. The plan is to develop new forms of collaborating and interacting and the rationale is to see what happens when you leave full access and openness to your own work for someone to interact with, change or even remove.

Helen will be based in the White Cube space at NewBridge.

Bio:
Helen Edling
Born Stockholm, Sweden.
MA Fine Art, Newcastle University, UK
Currently based in Roslagen, Sweden

"Edling bases her work in ideas of play and improvisation and engage in projects ranging from drawing, sculpture, and interactive marionettes to outdoor interventions and theatrical site-specific work. This multidisciplinary approach has evolved out of experimentation with found or easily accessible materials intertwined with a will to learn and to appropriate new ideas and concepts.

With references to theatre and circus and with an interest in social systems and interpersonal hierarchies she creates open ended narratives and alternative orders which places the viewer in the centre, becoming the narrator, the director or the puppet master."
