Rush F.A.Q:

How do I become a brother?

To become a member of our brotherhood, you must first attend as many rush events as you can to become acquainted with our brothers and find out if our fraternity is right for you. Then we will conduct a formal interview to determine if you are qualified to become a pledge. As a pledge, you will learn what it takes to be a brother and invaluable information about the pre-medical process. Upon completion of all pledge requirements, you will become an active brother.

When does rush usually occur?

Sigma Mu Delta traditionally holds rush in the beginning of the Fall and Spring quarters. Look for our flyers throughout campus to see rush event times and locations.

Is the pledging process “hard?”

Many of our brothers can assert that their fondest memories in college were in their pledge term; however, pledging requires much hard work. We intentionally make our pledge process challenging to promote confidence—a confidence that benefits our brothers in the arduous journey to medical school. Pledging is also difficult because it helps us determine who are the most highly motivated and goal-oriented individuals—in other words, we only select the best of the best.

What kind of a time commitment should I expect as a pledge?

Pledging is very time demanding so good time management skills is a must; the pledge term takes roughly as much time as a 3 to 4-unit class.

I’m afraid my grades will be at risk if I pledge. Should I still join?

Although pledging demands much time, pledges are required to study in weekly library study hours. Based on your time management ability, there should be ample time to catch up with school work and thus it is not impossible to maintain your grades during the pledge term.

How long is the pledge process?

Seven weeks.

Is there a pledge fee?

There is a pledge fee involved but the entire amount is used solely for the pledge term (e.g. pledge materials, etc.).

About us:

Sigma Mu Delta was founded by eleven pre-medical undergraduates of the University of California at Davis on February 9, 1994. With the shared goal of forming a bond between pre-medical students on campus and of motivating each other in their pursuit of becoming physicians, the eleven founding fathers created a fraternity that was based upon the principles of Brotherhood, Education, and Dedication.
These ideals were first recognized by three of its founding brothers: Roger Fong, Duc Tran, and Loc Trieu. As they struggled in the process of preparing for the MCAT, a strong bond of friendship was established. Even after the MCAT, their support for one another continued; there was an unselfishness of teaching, learning, and sharing between them. No longer did any of them feel alone in their journey towards medical school. Soon after, having realized the benefits of sharing knowledge and experience among peers, the three decided to expand their circle of friendship to the eleven young men who would later form Sigma Mu Delta. Their common struggle was the building of a new pre-health fraternity based on those three principles of Brotherhood, Education, and Dedication. Each founding member contributed their time and effort on different tasks to create a foundation for the fraternity. Together they wrote a constitution, a pledge manual, and made specific offices. The founding fathers established the rituals and symbols of the fraternity, and developed the ceremonies of initiation and activation, which were to be carried out during each pledge term thereafter. The eleven founding fathers of Sigma Mu Delta hoped to create a strong foundation for future brothers of the fraternity to rely upon as pledges and actives.

Our Mission:

The mission of Sigma Mu Delta is to unify Pre-Medical students in a brotherhood dedicated to academic excellence. Sigma Mu Delta's foundation is based on the principles of Brotherhood, Education, and Dedication. The Fraternity provides a motivational and inspirational atmosphere to promote maturity.
