Middle Voice at Rattlestick, the apprentice company of Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, presents
With the Full Support of The Laurents/Hatcher Foundation and The Arthur Laurents Centennial Grant
The Enclave is the second workshop production from Middle Voice at Rattlestick for the 23rd Season at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater.
The Laurents/Hatcher Foundation has awarded The Arthur Laurents Centennial Grant to Middle Voice at Rattlestick to revive Arthur Laurents’ The Enclave. The play, first produced in 1973, exposes hypocrisy and heartbreak among a liberal group of friends when one of their own reveals a long-concealed secret about his lifestyle. The New York Times described The Enclave as: “[...] an attractively hard-edged style, with jokes cracking like ice in extra-dry martinis.”
Middle Voice is dedicated to developing emerging artists’ voices and creating work that travels to different communities, including all five New York City boroughs. The mission of The Enclave is for Middle Voice to create a space where different communities that have been fighting for LGBTQ+, housing and visibility rights can come together to be in community through theater. “I’m not telling you I don’t see. I’m telling you I won’t see. I refuse to see” (The Enclave).
This piece has a resounding voice today as it touches on race relations, homophobia, group think mentality, and what it means to be an American.
