...as if you didnt know these guys already!!!!in the back room of a yorkshire boozer, five uk dance music pioneers got together for a catch up over a few sherbets.
around the table and propping up the bar were ringleader edzy unique 3, whose 1988 ‘the theme’ inadvertently spawned the bleep genre (later taken overground by warp records); mark gamble (krush/rhythmatic) whose 1987 ‘house arrest’ was arguably the first uk-produced house record to prick the nation’s consciousness; gez varley (g-man/lfo) who, with mark bell was responsible for bleep’s defining moment - lfo’s eponymous debut single in 1990; fellow original warper winston hazel (forgemasters/the step}, era defining dj at sheffield’s seminal jive turkey sessions; and mark archer (altern 8/nexus 21), former mask-wearing acid house/raver turned techno wizard
by the time last orders had been called, a collaborative plan for new music and a live show drawing on all five’s immeasurable contributions to british electronic music, had been hatched
… and the originators were born.
“for warp records founders steve beckett & rob mitchell, ‘the theme’ was the impetus to start (warp) from a room in a shared house …having tried and failed to sign unique 3, warp debuted with the forgemasters (featuring winston hazel) ‘track with no name’.”
