The Twentieth Anniversary Party and Closing Night!
________________________________________________________

Endings are hard; beginnings are even harder. Something like Release the Bats just doesn’t appear. It is not plucked out from the sky or created from someone’s rib. It is an idea that if reasoned with or questioned would collapse upon it’s own self. Who would devote a whole event around something as unlovable as Death Rock music? A bastard hybrid of some of the world’s most reviled musical genres. Who would invest so much time on something that in the long run would surely end in complete and utter failure? Who? Dave & Jenn Bats, along with a few roguish ghouls, who saw something was needed. A focal point, a headquarters for the dejected and passionate lost souls of Southern California.

Twenty years of anything becomes an institution, it becomes the inspiration that all must be compared to or draw strength and courage from. What Release The Bats has done is nothing short of spectacular with a pint of the absurd, always the absurd. What other event has ever stayed at the same venue (the wonderful Que Sera) and almost never deviating from the same night? What is the last Friday of the month in Socal without RtB? You see there is that sense of continuity and resolve that is so gravely needed within a scene as so fragile and fragmented as ours. RtB has become the oasis in an otherwise static desert.

It all started, the only way it should, as a Halloween party. October 30, 1998 to be exact. Could it have been any other day, really? Was it a success? Well we wouldn’t be here talking about it had the outcome been otherwise. It was a major success and the little dark engine that couldn’t, did and the world as we have known it was gone forever. The Bats were released!

There is little to even less of a point discussing the legacy of RtB without talking about their biggest impact. Music. The sheer volume of underground artists, the ones who wouldn’t fit in anywhere else is beyond ridiculous. From the very first night with the then very young Cinema Strange onto the legendary Mephisto Walz, Gitane Demone, 45 Grave, Eva O, Frank the Baptist, and on. It wasn’t just the legends that walked through, RtB has also cultivated and nurtured newer acts. Dave & Jenn realized very early on, as every good promoter should, that new music and new artists keep the scene alive and relevant. A very long roster of newer artists owes a debt to RTB for championing them.

To sum this all up, into a nice coffin shaped box, what's magical about such a place is the care and love that went into making it. It permeates through the fog and overlaps the style with something most other places have forgotten to share and that is heart. Release the Bats was never just a club but a wayward home for the orphans of the night. If it were simply a nightclub, we would not be here 20 years later, toasting its long dark passage into the night. In the end, I would like to believe that we see Release the Bats rear its evil misshapen head up from the swamps soon in some form. I would wager my very soul on it.
