Bart van Lier trombone
For our Summer Big Band collaboration, our students will have the opportunity to work with Bart van Lier, Principal Trombonist with the Metropole Orkest, who you may have seen feature as a soloist in last Summer’s Charlie Mingus BBC Prom, conducted by Jules Buckley.
Established in 1945 to help raise the morale of the Dutch people following the Second World War, this multiple Grammy-winning jazz and pop orchestra have shared the stage with a stellar list of musicians, from Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz and Brian Eno, through to Gregory Porter and Basement Jaxx.
Bart is a phenomenal jazz improviser and every solo is a leap into the deep. Composer/arranger Bill Holman described his playing style as having: ‘imagination, wit, taste, heart, a warm sound and great technique…’ and the website All About Jazz described his ‘buttery tones’! Tonight’s set will feature a mixture of solos and ensemble pieces including compositions and arrangements by Holman, Jerome Kern and Schwartz/Dietz as well as some of Bart’s own arrangements.
