Dharma Talk: True Perception
with Shastri Ellen Rook
Thursday, May 3, 6-8 p.m.

We are delighted to continue our Dharma Talk series on the first Thursday of the month! The evening includes meditation practice, a talk, discussion, and time for visiting. Tea and snacks will be served.

What does true perception mean to you? On May 3, join Shastri Ellen Rook for an open-hearted exploration of this question and the path of Shambhala Art. The great Tibetan meditation teacher and founder of Shambhala, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, practiced calligraphy, ikebana (flower arranging), and poetry. He encouraged his students to have a contemplative relationship with life and to create works of art that were direct, unselfconscious, and compassionate. His aim was, in his own words, to bring "art to everyday life" and to inspire true perception, an opening of our senses to the phenomenal world. Today, Shambhala Art is an international arts program that invites us all to wake up to the goodness and dignity of each moment. Come learn the history of this tradition and join in a practice that has the power to awaken and liberate.

Shastri Ellen Rook encountered the Shambhala teachings in upstate New York in 1980. She has studied with both Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. For many years, Ellen served as Director of the Shambhala Meditation Center of Albany. She was appointed by Sakyong Mipham to the position of Shastri, or senior teacher, in 2012. Ellen is married with three adult daughters. She recently retired from her position as Director of Application Development for the State of New York. Ellen enjoys gardening, writing poetry, jogging, and flower arranging. She is authorized as a teacher in the Sogetsu ikebana tradition.

Everyone is welcome.
