Joyful Discipline: A Mediation Retreat
with Bryan Mendiola, Shambhala Instructor
Sunday, June 3, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
*Half-day option available*
Whether we are new to meditation or have years of practice, we seek ways to deepen our awareness of ourselves and others in order to be of benefit to this world. Join us for a day of practice exploring joyful discipline and the path of the Boddhisattva Warrior.
In the morning, we will delve into the discipline of meditation as a way to more fully connect to ourselves and discover how "discipline brings joy” — in this case, the joy of being in relationship with each other and with our world in an awake and engaged way. The Bodhisattva Warrior views meditation as a means of making oneself ever more present and available for the benefit of others. Meditation instruction will be provided.
In the afternoon, we will have an opportunity to engage in a group dialogue practice known as social meditation. Together, we will more fully explore connection, presence, and understanding in relationships, particularly when it comes to social-cultural identity. What are the personal, emotional, and societal obstacles to authentic relationships with those different from ourselves? How can we use the practice of meditation to realize more gentleness, openness, awareness, and honesty, even in our most challenging relationships? These are questions at the heart of the Bodhisattva Warrior and the path of joyful discipline.
