'Body Image and the Media' -
This presentation takes a look at main stream media and its effects on body image, from the stand point of a plus size model and therapist. In the work that I do as an eating disorder therapist, I get a firsthand look at the effects of the message that is portrayed to adolescents, teens, and adults through media. Unrealistic and often false body image and beauty standards are frequently displayed to the public and this often gets “normalized” and results in unrealistic and unhealthy expectations on both a societal and individual level. As a plus sized model, I have experienced body image related struggles related to the media, as well as received a behind the scenes look at what really goes into some of the advertising campaigns; the makeup, lighting, Photoshop, etc. It is important to create an awareness of what is being portrayed, as well as the unrealistic standards this creates. This awareness can not only help us to protect our self image as a society and as as individuals, but can also serve to create change in the media going forward for more realistic and diverse standards of beauty.
