The Division of Global Affairs is pleased to invite you to the DGA Signature Talk by Dr. Anoop Raman on the 11th April. Dr.Raman will speak about global health under the umbrella theme of human security. The talk is titled, "From Global to Local -- What the Global South can teach us about bringing value to US healthcare."
Anoop Raman, MD, MBA is the Medical Director of Mount Sinai's Unite Here Health Center, Asst Prof of Family Medicine in the Icahn School of Medicine, and Adjunct Asst Prof in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. In his role as Medical Director, untethered from fee-for-service practice, Dr. Raman is leading the effort to redesign primary care for members of the Unite Here union and their dependents in Atlantic City. The goal of the center is not unique: strive to achieve healthcare’s quadruple aim of increasing access, improving quality, decreasing costs, and bringing back joy in the practice of medicine. The difference is the results. Since starting two years ago, we have revamped the traditional scheduling system to drive wait-times from 3 weeks to 0 days; we have cut emergency room utilization by more than 34%; and we have achieved patient satisfaction Net Promoter Scores of over 85%. We know it’s working because our patients are happy and our practice is rapidly growing: volume has more than tripled from 1,500 to 4,500 patients, without any advertising. And as beta-site for new ideas in primary care, the center is actively works to spread its model of care across the Mount Sinai Health System, and eventually, the nation.
Dr. Raman received his BA in Economics from Brown University, and his MD and MBA degrees from a joint degree program with Tufts and Brandeis Universities. He completed his Family Medicine residency at Columbia University. Prior to residency, he worked for Partners In Health (PIH) as a clinical project manager working to expand primary care services in health centers across rural eastern Rwanda, through a Doris Duke Charitable Foundation grant.
