Angahara – Movement of Limbs
Angahara is a dynamic series of movements. It provides flexibility and strength, and with practice, leads to Angamardhanam or 'Mastery of Limbs'. Once we reach Angamardhanam, we are able to achieve the true qualities of an asana: 'Sthiram' – Steadiness and 'Sukham' – Comfort. Without preparing the body appropriately, we attempt practising all sorts of difficult postures and end up either injuring ourselves or spending too much time achieving the postures.
Angaharam involves moving the feet, ankles, calves, knees, waist, chest, shoulders and neck. We keep on moving the limbs, coordinating the hands and legs. All these movements work primarily on the spine and the hip, as without hip mobility and spinal flexibility, we cannot do any asana. As we keep practising, we will come to a point where we have achieved mastery over our limbs and can stay comfortably in any asana for long periods of time. This is the foundation. With a strong foundation, our progress towards the goal is much faster.
