Camp Wana Kura was established in 1990 and is a 4-day day camp. Each summer we host campers, ages 5-12, and teen aides, ages 13-17, at the Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve in San Diego County. This woodland setting is a wonderful place to commune with nature alongside lakes and trees where campers will enjoy games, swimming, arts and crafts, paddle boating, and tons of other fun activities while making friends with other kids living with diabetes. During camp, your camper will be provided snacks and cold beverages. All campers need to bring their lunch each day.
Camp Wana Kura is a lifeline for children with diabetes to develop the critical skills needed to thrive while managing this disease. Attending summer camp helps children develop social skills, self-respect and life-long friendships. We give kids the opportunity to meet other kids just like them while fostering independence, building self-confidence and gaining an awareness of a healthy lifestyle through education, nutrition, exercise, emotional well-being and glucose control.
We welcome adult volunteers (both medical and non-medical) as well.
