Sea Meadow Gifts and Gardens is excited to announce the sponsorship of a new program supporting the arts in Essex. At Sea Meadow’s Studio for the Arts, we are inviting fine artists from the region and beyond to take up residence here in Essex. Sea Meadow’s Studio Artist-in-Residence Program will give emerging artists visibility, time and space, to grow and develop their craft in an area rich with art traditions and history. As part of this program, each artist may facilitate workshops and classes, as well as offer the sale works created during their stay. Artist shows and sales will take place in our Essex Studio.

We are pleased to announce Joli Ayn Wood from the little mountain town of Floyd, Virginia will be joining us during May 2018. She’s our FIRST artist to kick off this exciting artist program.

Joli is an oil painter, working primarily out of doors, “en plein air.” She spends a great deal of time visiting our Cape Ann cultural area and painting on our beloved local marshes and beaches. Her favorite plein air subjects include the mountains, rural landscapes, and towns of Southwestern Virginia, the rugged coastlines of New England, as well as the striking Desert Southwest. While painting on location, her passion is to capture value, shape, color, and light quickly - most times within a couple of hours. Joli finds inspiration in the luminous works of Fitz Henry Lane and the abstract modernity of Georgia O’Keefe’s paintings, as well as contemporary plein air painters and illustrators of California and the West.

During her tenure at the Sea Meadow’s Studio for the Arts, Residency, the following workshops and activities with Joli are offered:

May 19 – Artist Plein Air Day at Cogswell Grant
9am - 4 pm
Grab your art supplies and easel and head to historic Cogswell Grant for an enjoyable day of painting with our Resident Artist, Joli, and many other local artists. There is no fee for this event.

May 20 - Creativity Boost with Hypnosis
5:30 pm
Join us at True North Wellness for a special hypnosis session designed to help boost and expand your creativity, no matter your medium. A great way to kick off an artistic week!

May 21-23 - Essex Plein Air Workshop
Sea Meadow’s Studio for the Arts Plein Air Workshop consists of three days painting Plein Air with Joli, demonstrations, individual assistance, and a group review each day. This 3-day workshop will cover not only the basics of plein air painting, but includes a more in depth study of color theory, composition, and values. Artists begin each morning in the studio with a demo, and discussion of materials and techniques. Artists and Joli venture out of doors the remainder of each workshop day to paint. Based on weather and where the group desires, artists set up to paint the marshes, beaches, and town. This workshop is geared for the intermediate to advanced artist working in oils, acrylics, or gouache.

For more information and to register, contact Joli Wood directly through her website www.joliaynwood.com.

Joli Ayn Wood will be in the Sea Meadow’s Studio to greet patrons, discuss work, and to offer “fresh” paintings for sale throughout the month of May.

Open Studio Hours: Each Friday in May beginning May 11, 2018 from 3 - 7 pm, Saturdays from 2 - 6 pm, and Sundays from 11 am - 3 pm.
