The Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project is a 23-mile extension of Washington’s existing Metrorail System. The $6.8 billion project is the largest expansion by route mileage since the inception of Metro in 1976. Phase 1 of the new line opened in July 2014, connecting East Falls Church with Tysons Corner and Reston. Preliminary construction of Phase 2 began in 2014, with an opening scheduled for some time in 2020.
Phase 2 is expanding the Silver Line another 11.5 miles to Loudoun County through Washington Dulles International Airport and will include six rail stations, nine entrance pavilions and pedestrian bridges, aerial guideways through Dulles Airport, and 89,000 feet of track. Phase 2 will provide a direct ride from Dulles to downtown Washington, creating a significant connection between the nation’s capital and the Dulles corridor.
Capital Rail Constructors, a joint venture of Clark Construction Group, LLC, and Kiewit Infrastructure South Co., is leading the design-build effort for Phase 2. The Silver Line extension is being overseen by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) and will be operated by the Metropolitan Washington Area Transit Authority (WMATA).
