Join us for a day full of adventure and discover one of the most mysterious Thracian sanctuary in the nearby Rhodope Mountains. Thracians were the first to settle in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, some 8,000 years ago, and their history is as fascinating as the Greek myths written about them.
Many Thracian sanctuaries that have been discovered in the Rhodope Mountains and Thracian Valley, and while they are all uniquely beautiful, the rocky plateau Belintash is perhaps one of the most mysterious places you can visit on a day trip from Plovdiv. Located 50 km south of Plovdiv, the sanctuary is believed to be more than 7,000 years old. Its name Belintash means white stone, also the stone of wisdom; the stone of living and all that is good.
Two deep wells engraved in the rock, that never dry up even in the middle of summer, link numerous channels to many shallow round holes of different sizes. There are conflicting theories as to the purpose of these man-made features. Some archeologists say that Belintash was a cult site of the Thracian tribe Bessi dedicated to Sabazios, the god of the living, fertility and healing; while others think Belintash was an ancient solar observatory and the holes and channels engraved in the rock represent a celestial map of the skies above.
Because Sabazios was a healer god, those who believe in his powers lay on one of the man-made rock beds to purify their bodies and souls.
We invite you to come and explore the mysteries of Belintash with us and to discover for yourself what makes this so place unique, and why so many people swear they feel some sort of "special energy" the moment they step onto the plateau.
We leave at 11:00 AM from Ramada Trimontium hotel and will drive 50 kilometers south-east from Plovdiv in a private passenger van to the area of Belintash. There we will leave the van and hike about 2.5 kilometers to the rocky plateau. Once we reach Belintash's top we will stay awhile soaking up the sun and enjoying the view. There is a possibility to extend the hike and explore more the area around the plateau
