This will be Los Van Van's first appearance in Boston since 2006 and the band will be performing at the momentous Artes de Cuba celebration at the The John F. Kennedy Center Performing Arts Center in Washington D.C. the night prior, Saturday, May 19.
Los Van Van is the most recognized post-revolution Cuban musical group, led for many years by bassist Juan Formell until his death in 2014. Formell and former band members Changuito and César "Pupy" Pedroso are three of the most important figures in contemporary Cuban music.
Founded in Cuba in 1970 by Juan Formell, (who passed away in 2014) the band is now directed by Juan's son, drummer Samuel Formell. The band's bassist, Juan Carlos Formell and singer Vanessa Formell are also Juan's children.
The style that the band pioneered took its name from the cross of son and go-go music that the band had created. The musical style known as "songo" can now be found throughout the Latin jazz, pop and fusion worlds. Los Van Van's self-titled debut disc solidified its place in musical history forever. Shortly after the band's formation, they became Cuba's favorite dance band, a title they held for decades.
