SSCBC is proud to launch the Harry Baker Trophy. Harry was a sailor at the club from the age of 8(1956)and in his life sailed many races in many classes including Jubilees, Quickcats, a Cobra, a Laser, crewed on Harley Moffatt's Couta boat Elsie and Colin Mitchell's Rhapsody.
Jenifer Baker wanted Harry to be remembered with an award that would reward and encourage sailors, and in doing this to have his memory live on. We thought team racing would be perfect.
SSCBC has many connections to team racing in the form of sailors, coaches, race officials and even parent support. This coming weekend is the Victorian Schools State Team Racing Championship which will have many SSCBC members taking part. Looking further ahead, on the 28th and 29th of April will be Victorian State Team Racing Championship held in Albert Park and last year SSCBC had over 49 members take part in the competition with Mark Lloyd winning the event.
The Harry Baker Trophy will be an in house random pairs team racing event which will be held on the 21st of April. This will act as the perfect warm up event for the State titles as well as give a many junior members a chance to sail with coaches in a fun environment. It will also socially be a great excuse for the coaches to attend the Couta Boat prize giving taking place that evening at the club.
For those of you who are not aware of random pairs, It is individual team racing which sounds funny. This is achieved by having a flight sheet set out so that everybody sails with everybody against everybody. This is achieved by doing 2vs2 team racing (Golden rule is last boat loses) and constantly swapping partners. It gives a great opportunity for experienced helms to sail with inexperienced helms and if your knowledge of team racing is limited, as mentioned it is just avoid last place.
EXAMPLE of flight sheet:
Race 1:(A,B) vs (C,D)
Race 2:(A,C) vs (B,D)
Race 3:(A,D) vs (B,C)
If the Event is Blown out, It will take place on the 22nd of April instead of the Coaching session due to take place that day.
