April 20th is the anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting, and one of the most horrific days in American history. 13 people lost their lives: Cassie Bernall, Steve Curnow, Corey DePooter, Kelly Fleming, Matt Kechter, Daniel Mauser, Daniel Rohrbough, Rachel Scott, Isaiah Shoels, John Tomlin, Lauren Townsend, Kyle Velasquez, and Dave Sanders. We remember them and all the other victims of gun violence on this anniversary.
We walkout to show our power. If there is any doubt about the power that students hold in society, all we have to do it look at the impact that the mass movement of students walking our has had on local and state governments. The New York Times reported that protests occurred in no less than 390 of the 435 Congressional districts in the U.S., indicating the massive breadth of this upsurge which has put the right wing and especially the National Rifle Association on the defensive. Florida, known as ‘The Gunshine State’, recently implemented laws requires gun purchasers to be 21 years old, imposed a three day waiting period on purchasers, and banned bump stocks. These laws would not have been passed without the mass movement of students walking out of their classes, proving that organized students have the power to force a political alternative to the status quo.
We must increase the pressure not only on our government officials, but most importantly on the NRA, which funds many of our elected officials on both sides of the aisle*. Socialist Alternative believes that the solutions to gun violence in America begin with ending the corporate dominance of government and building a viable third party as well as a union movement that fights for working class people. We see this movement arising naturally from the outrage of the Parkland students, and thousands of other high school students who have walked out of their classes. Let”s build the pressure against the NRA and the government officials they have bankrolled!
Parkland students fight the NRA, and Socialist Alternative fights with them!
