If yoga were a smorgasbord, restorative postures would most definitely be dessert; it is meant to be savored. These soothing and well-supported poses offer the opportunity to linger quietly for a few moments and savor the simple sweetness of life. Restorative Yoga is a luscious way to gently move and stretch your body. Students stay in restful postures for 5-15 minutes with the support of props - bolsters, blankets, blocks - In order to allow the body to activate the relaxation response.
From the very first pose the parasympathetic nervous system is triggered by breathing deep diaphragmatic breaths. This activation mitigate the effects of the regular fight-or-flight stress response that can be damaging to your physiology and well-being. The overall calming effect on the nervous system comforts your mind and body down to the cellular level. As this occurs you are able to consciously, surrender the layers of physical and emotional holding.
Studies show restorative yoga activate the relaxation response reducing levels of the stress hormone cortisol which is linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, weight gain and chronic stress.
