The word "Tenebrae" is Latin for shadows. The Tenebrae service is held on Good Friday and recreates the emotional aspects of the passion story. There are scripture readings, solemn hymns, and the extinguishing of candles as the service progresses until the entire sanctuary is left in darkness with only the Christ candle remaining. The service ends, but the story is unfinished as the Christ candle continues pointing to the culmination of the Holy Week Passion Story - the Resurrection of our Lord on Easter.
