Also Known As - Adrian Hobbs
Exhibition 12 April – 29 April
Opening Wednesday 11 April | 6-8pm
A.K.A or Also Known As is the first solo exhibition for painter Adrian Hobbs where the ideas that drive his practice; the tenets from which his imagery is developed, are also the subject of the paintings themselves. This self-referential loop from internal structure to image/subject and back again is an attempt to explore the possibilities for Painting where it’s elementary and arguably discreet components are seen in a mutual, non-exclusive and generative (as opposed to reductive) way. The surface, illusory space, the subject, the frame or edge, the object, and the medium for Hobbs are not fixed or reliable, or even constant, but instead are ripe with change and novelty.
The title, ‘Also Known As’ refers to the repetitive use of a single form. However not one that functions like a multiple, a passive re-iteration or echo of something you might refer to as an archetype. But instead as an individual, in every instance, one that deflects assumption. How can this form differ, how can it change while ostensibly still being the same? And furthermore, how does that form shape the space in which it is housed and how do the two relate?
A.K.A, perhaps the most common of acronyms, indicates both structure and form. The same interior elements shaped so that with each instance their appearance and character differ enough to be given yet another name.
