Lake Perez,Rocky Ridge Natural Area, and Mierly Wetland
Trip Leader: Greg Grove
Northern Huntingdon county has a diverse selection of habitats that hosts a diversity of migrants and breeding birds. Please join Greg Grove as we visit Lake Perez, Rocky Ridge Natural Area, and Mierly Wetland outside of Cornpropst Mills.
Starting at Lake Perez, participants will spend a short time scanning the lake for waterfowl, terns, herons, and other migrants. We will then proceed to Rocky Ridge Natural Area on Frew Road in Rothrock State Forest (approx. 25 minute drive) to hike a loop that includes a portion of the Standing Stone Trail (SST). This portion of the field trip will focus on returning songbirds. This hike also features outstanding rock formations** and possible spring ephemerals. Hike will approximately last 2 hours with a distance of 1.5 miles, give or take. This portion is considered medium (at most) difficulty with a short climb (not difficult) of about 150 feet in elevation at the beginning. Please dress accordingly as the trail is somewhat rocky - some may prefer to use hiking poles.
** Those interested in the geology - check this web link from Stan Kotala, but note we will not follow the course of the hike described therein.
After Rocky Ridge Natural Area, we then take a short drive to visit Mierley Wetland near Cornpropst Mills. This property has recently implemented management practices through the Huntingdon County Conservation Distict that includes a wetland and agricultural fields.
Please meet at the Stone Valley Recreation Area boat launch at 7am.
