From November 1st through 15th, the State of Minnesota will hold an evidentiary hearing on whether to allow Enbridge to build the proposed new Line 3 tar sands pipeline. All are encouraged to show up for as much of the time as you can.
DAILY SCHEDULE: Hearing is ongoing from 9:30am-4:30pm, drop in/out as you wish. Recap briefings / Q&A about the process will be held twice daily by pipeline fighters, once during the lunch break (around noon) and once after the hearing ends for the day; meet outside the hearing room. The hearing will be held in the PUC Large Hearing Room on the third floor of the Metro Square Building, 121 7th Pl E, St. Paul. Hearings will take place on November 1, 2, 3, 6, 8, 9, 13, 14, and 15.
An evidentiary hearing is very much like a court trial. It's the chance for Enbridge and the intervening parties to argue their case and try to convince the judge to take their side. Some of the groups who will be fighting Enbridge at this hearing include the Youth Climate Intervenors, Honor the Earth, Sierra Club North Star Chapter, Friends of the Headwaters, and five tribal nations. The hearing will be conducted by Judge Ann O'Reilly, who will ultimately decide whether to recommend building or denying the pipeline.
Like a court trial, the public is welcome to attend but not to speak. We know that being physically present is a big commitment, and it makes a big impact, so please plan to be there for as much of the time as you can. The evidentiary hearing is scheduled over nine days because there's so much to get through, and there will be different things happening each day, like a multi-day trial.
One of the most important things that will happen in the evidentiary hearing is that each side's experts will have a chance to present their views and be cross-examined by the opposition. This means that Enbridge's pipeline experts will be questioned by groups that oppose the pipeline, and we'll also get to hear amazing movement leaders, oil experts, climate scientists, and others opposed to Line 3 speak and be questioned by Enbridge. There will be different experts on the stand each day.
Show up, wear any #StopLine3 gear you have (we'll also have stickers at the hearing), bring your friends and community members and let's stop this pipeline!
