Encuentro is a musical/group formed in Halifax with the intention to promote Hispano-American music genres, characterized by fascinating rhythms, passionate lyrics, and a good dose of romanticism. The Encuentro musicians are primarily of Mexican nationality, but Canadian artists have joined the group driven by a genuine interest in Hispanic/Latin American culture and the Spanish language.
The Spanish word "encuentro" could be translated as encounter, gathering, or getting together, but perhaps its most accurate meaning would be "to bump into each other", in the sense of meeting by chance. The name of the group thus reflects the way it started and the fact that the members from different corners of the world found each other in Halifax and were connected through music.
At its inception Encuentro members simply had the intention of getting together over potluck dinners to play and sing. Nowadays we are as well performing for cultural and private events.
Current group members:
Armando Manolo Alvarez (guitar), Carlos Garduno (guest member, percussions and voice), Elizabeth Guerra (percussions and voice), Gregory Hughes (bass, accordion and voice) and Rafael Garduno (guitar and voice)
