This art installation is based off the poem "What I Was Wearing" written by Mary Simmerling. The installation started at the University of Arkansas in 2013 and was titled "What Were You Wearing". The purpose of the installation is to dispel the myth that clothing determines consent. We emphasize moving away from placing blame on the survivor and placing responsibility on those that caused the harm, where it belongs.
The stories told in this installation were shared by survivors and are used with their consent. The clothing displayed are not the actual clothing worn by the survivor, but are recreations of the stories that are represented. We hope that survivors that donated their stories or interact with this installation feel heard, validated, believed, and know that the assault was not their fault.
