For forty years the humorist David Sedaris kept diaries in which he recorded everything that captured his attention - overheard comments, salacious gossip, soap opera plot twists, secrets confided by total strangers. These observations provided the source for his finest work and through them he honed his cunning, surprising sentences. In the first of two volumes – Theft by Finding: Diaries (1977-2002) – Sedaris now shares his private writings to tell the story of a life that is extraordinary in so many ways – the drug addiction, the eccentric family, the crazy jobs, the fame, the globetrotting. The diaries as presented tend to be on the true-ish side, but comic writers have always received a special dispensation when it comes to accuracy.
