Awakening the spine 6 week course; This subject is close to my heart…….. Literally!
Vanda Scarvelli reminds us that there is a division in the centre of our back , where the spine moves simultaneously in two opposite directions ; from the waist down towards the legs and feet , which are pulled by gravity, and from the waist upwards , through the top of the head lifting us up freely.
The pull of gravity is ever present to assist us in our practice – we can liken our yoga practice to the magnificence of any tree. The roots are pulled deeply down towards the centre of the earth while the trunk grows vertically towards the sky, elongating and spreading through the branches into the space around it
This is how we begin to awaken our spine. If we maintain that each yoga pose is accompanied by breathing throughout our practice we can observe that it is during the process of exhalation that the spine can stretch and elongate without effort . We learn to maintain space , elongate and extend rather than pull and push. Space, elongation and extension can only occur when the pulling and pushing has come to an end: this is the beginning of awakening the spine.
I quite often observe students holding their breathe while ‘performing’ a pose. This is counter – productive because it blocks the lovely movement of the lungs expanding when in connection with the spine as it is in action. To follow the way the spine functions during the process of breathing is of great interest to me and I have been discovering a great deal through my own practice by focussing on this. The wave of expansion while exhaling, originating from the spine has become the basis of my teaching of awakening the spine.
