Promoted as a triumph for actress Sally Hawkins, this film is the
story of Maud Lewis, one of the most beloved folk artists of 20th
century Canada. It doesn’t go into great biographical detail but
focuses on Maudie’s battle for independence, afflicted as she is
by some debilitating illness. It shows, instead of tells, and what
it shows is sad, disturbing, beautiful and moving all at once. Set
in Nova Scotia and partially shot in Ireland, there’s some breath-taking scenery, too.
