“Inspirational Quests: Using Sport for Charitable Fundraising”

Speakers include Director of the Garden Museum Christopher Woodward and actor Bertie Portal.

CHRISTOPHER WOODWARD: SWIMMING TO MORDOR

Having swum The Hellespont, Straight of Gibraltar and The Thames from Oxford to London to raise money to enhance The Garden Museum, in September last year Christopher Woodward completed his swimming story with a 30 kilometre swim in the Arctic Circle, retracing part of John Tradescant’s own journey to Russia in 1618. Christopher’s Arctic Circle swim raised enough money to allow The Garden Museum to display two specimens which were once in John Tradescant’s Museum: the skeleton of a right whale and a Nile crocodile.

BERTIE PORTAL: FACING THE ATLANTIC

Actor Bertie Portal describes the highs and lows of his epic charity transatlantic rowing expedition with crewmate James Cash in 2012. Bertie was raising money for Facing the World , a charity started by his friend Martin Kelly in 2002, offering pioneering surgery to young children with facial deformities and he raised a staggering £400,000.00. Bertie is best known as an actor, and was recently in the BBC Two crime drama Collateral. He has been in numerous TV and radio dramas as well as many West End plays. His other works include Welcome to the Punch, The King’s Speech, My Week With Marylyn, The Iron Lady, Mr Turner, and The Huntsman: Winter’s War. Apart from rowing the Atlantic Ocean, Bertie has also completed the 350 mile Marathon des Sables in Morocco. He is a keen cold water swimmer and member of the South London Swimming Club based at Tooting Bec Lido.
