Making It Our Business: Entrepreneurial Approaches to Increase Wealth for Low Income Communities:

A lot has changed since Policy and a Pint last visited the theme of entrepreneurship in 2012. There is an increase in social enterprise activities—non-profit or government programs with a social mission using the market-driven approaches of a business to tackle issues such as alleviating hunger, improving education, and other community needs. The concept has become increasingly common as a result of government funding cuts to social programs. Other factors promoting the growth of social enterprise include growing nonprofit recognition of the importance of earned income to enable their organizations to independently sustain and support programs that make sense for their communities, build community wealth, and directly improve the job skills of people facing barriers to entry in the workplace.
At our next Policy and a Pint, we will learn how Duluth area social enterprises are creating locally-controlled wealth, providing valuable workforce training opportunities and supportive jobs for those who have been excluded from the traditional labor market while strengthening an organization’s management and business capacities to do more for the communities it serves.

The event will be hosted by regional MPR News reporter Dan Kraker.

Complimentary appetizers provided. Cash bar.

This event sponsored by The Bush Foundation and Target, and presented by the Citizens League and The Current, returns to the theme of social entrepreneurship.
