In this series of 12 sessions, we will introduce you to General British (GB) English for healthcare professionals, with reference to selected coursebooks on English for careers and special purposes. We focus on medical vocabulary, including pronunciation and syntax, within the context of the British systems of medical education and healthcare. All Ukrainian healthcare providers with foreign patients, or those contemplating service in an English-speaking country, either where English is an official language or a lingua franca, will benefit from attending this course.
This course is designed for practitioners in all fields of professional healthcare, including Dentistry, Dietetics, Medicine, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Optometry, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Radiography, Speech Pathology and Veterinary Science. Practitioners of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, Psychologists, Technicians, and Paramedics will also benefit from attending, as will administrative and support staff in any of these fields, and all those with an interest in health matters in an English language environment.
The lessons are cumulative and progressive, in that every lesson expands and builds on the work and knowledge of previous lessons. Therefore, it is important that you make a commitment to attend every lesson. In the exceptional event that a lesson is missed for reasons beyond your control, you should make arrangements with us to catch up with the missed material, in a timely manner, with a special catch-up session (see below for more information). Otherwise, subsequent lessons may be compromised and rendered less effective as a result. Homework will be assigned, and, although it is not obligatory that you do it, better results will generally be achieved by those who do.
