Nigel’s story ~
After brain cancer interrupted the vibrant life of six-year-old competitive skier Nigel Holland, him and his family fought to stay strong through brain surgery, chemotherapy and the reality that his dreams of competitive skiing would have to be put on hold. Through physical therapy and determination, Nigel learned to walk again at age seven and was pronounced cancer-free in 2008. The Big Bear High Schooler would eventually learn to ski again, enjoy hiking, riding bikes and other everyday teenager activities.
Three months ago Nigel was planning to celebrate being 10 years cancer free when he suffered a devastating stroke leading to bleeding on the brain from lesions caused by previous radiation therapy. The stroke left him without feeling in his right arm and leg. He spent 30 days in recovery at Loma Linda hospital to stabilize the bleeding and begin physical therapy to learn how to walk again, for the third time in his life.
Our wish for Nigel is to get access to the best physical therapy possible in order for him to have a better quality of life and maybe even one day get back on the mountain.
