The sound of Everything Everything has remained a volatile beast; a musical bucking bronco, their albums maximalist, frenetic, art-pop juxtapositions of R’n’B melancholia and Afrobeat, of synths, guitars, falsetto. Their debut album Man Alive showcased their skillful songwriting abilities, leading them to their acclaimed second album Arc, of which spawned much-loved singles “Cough Cough” and “Kemosabe.” Third album Get To Heaven, reinforced them as one of the best-loved British bands with memorable moments including “No Reptiles” and “Distant Past.”
Their fourth album, A Fever Dream, is a quite different prospect: a calibration of chaos and control, the result of a curious desire for consistency, littered with touches of electronic music that guitarist Alex Robertshaw had loved as a teenager — early Warp Records releases, Aphex Twin, Autechre, Boards of Canada, amalgamated with American heavy bands of the early-mid 90s. The album is a particularly striking reflection of the times. It tackles the surrealism present in the world, encapsulating and then transposing it effortlessly; a portrait of an increasingly faceless and impersonal world - a feverish dream. Heart-wrenching moments next to complete rage give this politically charged album notable hypnotic capabilities. Everything Everything’s reaction to the this renders them a group that are unwilling to become immobilized by the temperature of the times.
