Pre-registration by April 20 is required.
This practicum is a concise two-day course in the theory and practice of practical celestial navigation.
Participants will learn basic principles, timekeeping, almanac usage, sight reduction methods and position plotting, and training and observation with a marine sextant. Alternative reduction by scientific hand calculator will be discussed, and a PC-based programmed calculator emulator offered.
At the conclusion, participants will be able to take sights, reduce them and plot positions from daily observations of the sun – our closest star. Morning twilight observations of the moon and planets may be offered, all dependent on weather conditions.
No special math skills are required—only addition and subtraction, and table look-ups. All materials will be provided, just bring your interest and enthusiasm and be ready to have fun!
