Ancient styles with bold modern flavours: meetings between the old and the new thread through this stimulating concert directed by SCO Leader Benjamin Marquise Gilmore. Peter Warlock makes a modern twist on 16th-century themes in his charming Capriol Suite, while Grieg combines the Baroque invention of Bach, Handel and Scarlatti with a distinctive Nordic folk twang in his buoyant Holberg Suite. The ancient theorbo is in the spotlight for British composer Stephen Goss’s new Concerto, performed by the spectacular Matthew Wadsworth – and even Geminiani gets in on the act by taking his teacher Corelli’s already virtuosic Concerto Grosso and making it even more ingenious and brilliant.

PURCELL - Chacony in G minor
WARLOCK - Capriol Suite
GOSS - Theorbo Concerto (UK Premiere)
GEMINIANI (after CORELLI) - Concerto Grosso op 5 No 12 ‘La Folia’
MENDELSSOHN - String Symphony in B minor
GRIEG - Holberg Suite, Op 40
