FREE: Scavenger hunt to track down and map the remaining London street signs that bear what is now the postcode for Newcastle. Please RSVP via http://www.ghostsigns.co.uk/nesigns.
This scavenger hunt came about via a twitter conversation where a few of us were finding and mapping surviving street signs featuring the now-defunct NE Postal District. Our aim is now to conduct a comprehensive survey of these signs, verifying those that area already known about. We are doing this through a free public scavenger hunt where everyone is invited to participate, either as individuals or in teams.
The process will consist of dividing up the area that we have identified into sections that each person/team can take on to survey. Surveying will consist of walking down each stretch of road, looking for and documenting the surviving signs that exist there. Results can be recorded via paperwork that we’ll supply and/or digitally via Twitter and email. Some basic instructions are given below.
- Take two photos of the sign, one close up, and one showing the wider context.
- Share the photos on Twitter with a description of the location (e.g. at corner of Queensbridge Road) and the hashtag #NESigns. The hashtag is very important to allow us to find your contributions.
- If you aren’t on Twitter then you can also email email@example.com with the photos and location description.
As the afternoon progresses, we’ll be live updating the map so that we can all compare notes and share the results at the pub after the hunt.
