Wax carving and lost wax casting has been used for thousands of years to create some of the world’s greatest sculpture and jewellery. This relatively unchanged process is the most common used today to transfer a three-dimensional design from wax into metal.
Students will be walked through the process of casting with a presentation and handouts explaining how their wax designs will become metal. We will walk through the various tools used to remove as well as add wax to create your designs.
Students will learn the differences between a successful wax carving and what design methods are to be avoided when their waxes become metal (comfort of piece, weight, wearability, etc.).
Once the waxes are casted, students will learn how to clean their castings using files, sandpaper, patinas and polishing to reach a desirable finish.
Students will end the course with casted pieces as well as pieces in wax to be casted if they desire. The first wax pieces will be sent to cast as the end of the second day of class so students will have their pieces back in metal on the fourth day of class to clean and finish.
