"Physical Products: From Idea to On-the-Shelf"
with George Yu, CEO and Founder of Variable Inc.
Taking physical product ideas to production is a long and challenging road. Mistakes can be expensive and lead time can be long when dealing with overseas manufacturing. Dr. George Yu, CEO of Variable, Inc, will be sharing his experience in taking his sensor product ideas from inception through the complex logistic chain and dealings with suppliers all around the world. Dr. Yu will also discuss his experience in building his electronics manufacturing in Chattanooga, TN.
Dr. George Yu is the founder and CEO of Variable, Inc and an entrepreneur with a passion for sensing technologies. Born in Wuhan, China to parents who are both scientists. At the age of 11, he moved to Houston, Texas with his parents. In 2008, upon graduating from Georgia Tech with a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, he worked with NASA Ames to develop the smartphone-based toxic gas sensors for the Dept. of Homeland Security. In 2012, he founded his company, Variable, Inc, and created the NODE Bluetooth sensor platform allowing interchangeable sensor modules to work wirelessly with smartphones. In 2012 when his first daughter was born, he discovered the difficulty in choosing a color for her room and decided to make digital color matching technology available to all. He created the NODE Chroma color sensing technology to accurately measure the color of paint, plastics, and textiles. After several years of development, the technology matured to the next generation of color matching technology called Color Muse. Color Muse is revolutionizing the world by bringing an accurate, low-cost solution to color communication for brands, designers, and consumers.
