For our final event of the academic year, we're bringing in none other than the eclectic genius, Romare for an extended DJ set!
Creativity has no limits when it comes Romare's music; whether it be blending bass-heavy R&B samples with retro-funk, jazz & blues in his albums; playing experimental electronic & world elements with a backing 808 drum-loop in his live sets, or mixing all of the above with lost underground disco cuts and pumping techno thrown into his DJ sets.
Having studied African-American Visual Culture in university, he drew inspiration from the cut-and-paste collages of artist Romare Beaden and applied a similar technique to his own music. After playing in bands during his youth, he moved to Paris and picked up a pair of turntables and began mixing his own records with samples from second-hand records. Romare the musician was born and the template for his debut record was crafted.
Since signing to underground label Black Acre in 2012, he's released sonic works of art like Meditations on Afrocentrism, Love Songs: pt I & II, and his critically-acclaimed debut album, 'Projections', voted Album of The Year by DJ Mag. With three Boiler Room's under his belt (yes, 3!), he's gained appraisal from artists and music lovers from across the spectrum such as Annie Mac, Four Tet, Pete Tong and Bradley Zero, with notable features on compilations by Bonobo, Tiga and Giles Peterson.
This is an event you truly do not want to miss - a storyteller musician and one heck of a DJ, playing everywhere from Gottwood, DGTL and Dimensions festival to XOYO, Phonox & Hidden, and we've only gone and got him at The Harley!
