We invite you to join us for our Discussion Group at the Humanist Hub each Monday from 7-9pm. The mission of the Humanist Hub is to be an inclusive community of atheists, agnostics and allies creating a new model for how humanists celebrate life, promote reason and compassion, and better the world for all. Please try to arrive on time, as doors will be locked at 7:20.
We typically take the themes from the Sunday talk and discuss how those themes relate to our personal experience.
By focusing our discussion on how the topic affects us personally, an environment supportive of openness, honesty and vulnerability is created. Science, data and debate are set aside in a “parking lot” and often returned to once the Discussion Group has concluded. Rob Laurent, founder of the Discussion Group and one of its facilitators, describes the small group experience as a “friendship ritual,” i.e. “by coming together as friends and sharing our personal experiences as we would with friends, we often become friends.”
Group norms include:
* Assume goodwill
* Use “I” statements and speak from personal experience
* Avoid advice giving
* Topics not of a personal nature or of interest to only a few members will be set aside in a “parking lot” to be returned to later
* Please respect the anonymity of group members and refrain from sharing specifics outside the group
Attendance at the Sunday talk is not required to be part of the Discussion Group. Most Sunday talks are viewable via Facebook live and archived on our Facebook page.
RSVPs are encouraged but not required. Having a good estimate of the number of attendees helps ensure we have a sufficient number of small group facilitators available.
