(NOTE: The deadline to apply for this course has now passed.)

The Islamic Foundation (Leicestershire), in partnership with the College of Islamic Studies, Hamad Bin Khalifa University (Qatar), invites Britain's Muslim community leaders, activists, and imams to apply for a two-day intensive course on combatting extremism through the Islamic tradition. Through a multifaceted engagement with the Qur'anic concept of wasatiyya (Islamic moderation), internationally recognised academic experts and real-world practitioners will provide an understanding of the ideological facets of extremist thinking. They will present important insights into the intellectual tools at the disposal of the Islamic scholarly tradition for combating extremist tendencies among a tiny but dangerous minority of modern Muslims. Through workshops, participants will also have the opportunity to reflect on how such insights may be applied in a British context, and discover what lessons can be learnt from the Qur'an and Sunna for thriving as faithful Muslim minorities in pluralistic societies.

Main speakers:

Dr Shabbir Akhtar (Oxford University)
Prof Muhammad Khalifa Hasan (Hamad Bin Khalifa University)
