– “Munson’s too-good-to-be-true slide guitar and wry delivery give [these] cuts an irresistible swagger.” Hymies Vintage Records, Minneapolis
– “The only complaint I ever have about his sets is that they come to an end. Mike (the man and musician) exudes quality.” Ed Hoffman, Owner of Ed’s(no name) Bar, Winona
Making his home in the Mississippi River town of Winona, Minnesota, Mike Munson is well known for playing slide guitar blues. The driving rhythms in his songs are reminiscent of the trains that barrel through his neighborhood. Munson makes regular appearances throughout the Midwest, and is currently working on his third release following a debut studio recording and the acclaimed “Live at Ed’s” releases in 2014. Mike Munson, along with
Mikkel Beckman, represented the state of Minnesota in the Solo/Duo category of the 2017 International Blues Challenge in Memphis.
Chris Avey and Jeni Grouws are the leaders of the Iowa Blues Challenge winners, Avey/Grouws Band. The Avey/Grouws Duo formed after the two met at a blues jam in the Quad Cities. Chris Avey has been called a 'younger, more fiery Coco Montoya' and captivates audiences with his incredible skill on both electric and acoustic guitar, his gritty growl and his sense of humor. Jeni Grouws has been called a 'shooting star' with a voice that is like 'a choir of angels on a runaway train'. The duo has penned original music with a Roots/Americana feel, and they continue to reinterpret songs they love. Chris Avey and Jeni Grouws have spent the last 2 years playing festivals such as Hambone Music Festival, the Mississippi Valley Blues Festival and Prairie Dog Blues Fest, as well as bars and music joints across the Midwest. The band just released the EP "Avey/Grouws Band: Road to Memphis". The Avey/Grouws Band just returned from a Semi Finals finish at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis.
